Torbay Poetry Competition (August)

Torbay Open Poetry Competition. Torbay Poetry Festival. Once again, we have some new events, and as usual inspired by comments from previous years. Saturday sees the return to Torbay of Kit Wright. Many in the Bay remember his previous visit and will look forward to his entertaining poems before the Supper. Sunday is a day of requested returns. The Festival Debate returns in the morning, Lunch time sees the return of The Festival Challenge, so sharpen your pens again.

In the afternoon, the excursion is an up-dated Where the Writers Wrote (6th Festival), a coach trip around Torbay with afternoon tea at the Michelin-starred Orestone Manor, arriving back at the Grosvenor Hotel in plenty of time for the evening reading. We enjoy our audiences participating in the Festival. Indeed ‘To have great poets there must be great audiences too’ – Walt Whitman. This year we have 16 events where the audience can join in. Like we’ve said before, not only do we encourage poets and audiences to mix and exchange views, but we also try to make sure that the audiences also mix. Time between events, with food and wine available, can ensure those vital poetic friendships are maintained. As always, we have tried to keep ticket prices to a minimum. So come and meet old, and make new, friends in what must be one of the most beautiful areas of the country. The weather is usually kind to us though we can’t guarantee it. But we can guarantee an exciting weekend filled with enjoyable poetry.

DUNCAN FORBES' poems have been published by Faber, Secker and Enitharmon, who brought out a Selected Poems, Lifelines, in 2009. It was drawn from five previous collections. www.enitharmon.co.uk Awards and prizes include a Gregory Award, TLS/Blackwells Prize, two Stephen Spender Times Translation Prizes and a Hawthornden Fellowship. SUNGLASS DESIGN CONTEST LAUNCHED BY POLAROID EYEWEAR - DESIGN AND BE PART OF THE POLAROID LEGACY

Students, Professionals and Design Aficionados Encouraged to Submit Entries

Inspired by the classic elegance of the 1930s? The retro swing of the 1950s? Or, perhaps, it's a futuristic vision of the 2020s that stirs your creativity? Let trends from past or future decades - between 1930 and 2020 - inspire you to unleash your design creativity and create a pair of unique, trend-setting sunglasses.

Polaroid Eyewear, a leader and pioneer in premium polarizing lenses and highly fashionable sunglasses since 1937, encourages students, professionals and design aficionados to participate in its design contest and win the chance to be part of the brand's iconic legacy. Polaroid Eyewear will produce the best original designs under its "Best Under The Sun™" Signature Sunglass Collection to be launched globally in spring 2013.

"The Polaroid "Best Under The Sun" Collection celebrates the brand's history of creating high fashion sunglasses , and the contest is our way of forging strong ties with our consumers who connect well with our heritage," said Jerry Dreifuss, Global Marketing Manager of Polaroid Eyewear. "The contest is also part of the company's new social media strategy to have more direct interaction with our consumers," added Mr. Dreifuss.

Decade after decade, Polaroid Eyewear continues to create lifestyle benchmarks. The first "Best Under The Sun" Collection was successfully launched in spring 2011 with 10 original designs from the Polaroid archives featuring stunning sunglasses from the 1930s to the 1980s worn by heroes and celebrities alike, all re-produced with meticulous detail. For its 2013 collection, Polaroid Eyewear is looking to launch fresh, new designs inspired by different decades.

The contest is open to anyone with a design background or quite simply with a keen eye for fashion and design. The contest will run from July 1, 2011 to September 30, 2011 when participants can submit their designs online; however, participants can sign up for the contest starting today on. Polarization

Daylight travels in waves oscillating in all directions of three-dimensional space. Polarized light also travels, but mostly moves in two dimensions: horizontally and vertically. Vertical light brings useful information to the human eye, enabling us to see colours and contrasts, while horizontal light simply creates optical noise or glare. Where light strikes a non-metallic surface such as water, it often reflects primarily in a horizontal plane. This creates a high concentration of glare which can be selectively blocked only by a good quality polarizing filter. Polarizing lenses selectively filter out the horizontal light, thus eliminating glare. Wearing Polaroid sunglasses means :

  • Glare-free vision
  • Clear contrasts
  • Natural colours
  • Reduced eye fatigue
  • 100% UV protection

Thermofusion™ technology

Thermofusion™ Technology is the innovative production process developed for Polaroid premium polarized UltraSight™ lenses. It is used to form lenses and protect the polarizer at the core of the lens. With both injection moulding and vacuum forming, the optical quality of the lens can be compromised during production - Thermofusion avoid this by protecting, shaping and tapering each lens during production, delivering the exceptional optic quality.

Thermofusion Technology creates lenses that are optically correct and block glare with great efficiency. They are also provide better scratch-resistance, impact resistance and give 100% UV protection.

Promoting sustainability

As part of the company's commitment to the environment, innovation and technology, Polaroid Eyewear is an official sponsor and supplier to PlanetSolar™, a ground-breaking project promoting the potential of renewable energy. PlanetSolar has an ambitious goal - to sail around the world using solar power alone. Along the way, it offers educational exhibitions to explore better ways to protect our planet.

The Propagandist Essay Contest 2011

The Propagandist is proud to announce our second annual essay contest, sponsored by the Free Thinking Film Festival. New and existing contributors are invited to submit an essay for any of our Propaganda Sections.

All approved essay contributions will appear in The Propagandist and the best essay wins $1000. Strike a blow for freedom and get paid.

Here are the contest rules and guidelines.

Essay Submission Deadline

Essays must be submitted by midnight on Monday, October 10, 2011 on Columbus Day. The essay winner will be announced on Thursday, November 10, 2011 in the week of Remembrance Day.

How To Submit Your Essay To The Propagandist

Contact us at info [AT] propagandistmag [DOT] com

Put “Essay Contest” in the Subject Line.

Multiple Submissions? Fire away

Multiple contest submissions are accepted. Regular contributors who submit articles to The Propagandist are advised to send an email noting which essays they would like to have entered in the contest.

Who Can Participate

The Propagandist welcomes essay contributions from anyone over the age of 18 living anywhere.

Essay contest participants are also invited to join The Propagandist's growing list of regular contributors, which already includes writers, journalists, activists, analysts and authors from around the world, including the USA, UK, Canada, Israel, South Korea, Brazil and elsewhere.

Participants must write under their own names. Pseudonyms will only be allowed in extremely rare exceptions where the anonymous writer may reasonably fear persecution, torture or death upon publication.

Essay Theme

While the scope of essay topics is unlimited, guiding themes might include the fight for freedom, overcoming challenges to modernity and the universality of human rights. However, contributors are invited to write on any theme consistent with our Propaganda Sections.

Essay Style

The Propagandist is a political magazine, not a literary journal. Essays should have a journalistic style touching on events happening now, not 50 years ago. Avoid an academic feel.

There is no limit on word length. Essays longer than 1000 words may be broken up into parts and published as a series at the discretion and mutual consent of the writer and The Propagandist's Editor. For judging, the parts would be combined into a single submission (though the writer may choose to submit other essays as well).

The Propagandist Essay Contest Judging Criteria

The winning essay will have the following :

  • A Powerful Argument.
  • Clear Writing
  • Popularity

Popularity? Yes, that is a factor in how we will choose our finalists for this contest. A bold thesis and perfect syntax will get you far, but to get to the final stage, you'll probably need some buzz.

An essay that gets lots of comments, receives more web traffic, gets more web links into The Propagandist site from other sites, exploits Facebook, Twitter, Digg and other social networks and generally creates a "buzz" is more likely to make it into the Top Ten Essay Finalist stage.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with essayists and fans promoting a high-quality piece of work. In fact, essayists who want to win this contest are highly encouraged to do so. This also adds an incentive for contest participants to get in their contributions as early as possible. The earlier you submit your essay, the quicker it gets published and the more time you have to promote your essay through your social networks, blogs, etc.

Popularity comes with a qualifier : The Propagandist reserves the right to not publish any submitted essay that does not meet our editorial standards. Thus, certain unethical nerds who want to swamp our magazine with poorly written off-topic junk and then spam the hell out of it to generate fake buzz will not be allowed to game the system.

Contest Rules Disclaimer

The Propagandist reserves the right to change these contest rules at any time without notice (though we probably won't -- it's just a disclaimer we had to include in case we need to improve clarity for participants).

The Winning Essay for The Propagandist Essay Contest

The Editor of the Propagandist will choose the top ten essays based on the criteria outlined above. These essays will be then be given to a judge on the board of The Free Thinking Film Society for final review. The winner announced on Thursday, November 10, 2011 will be sent a check for $1000 (CDN funds).

Good luck to all competitors. May the best essay win.
