Jane Austen Writing Short Story Contest (Deadline March 2011)

. . . the competition that celebrates the life and work of Jane Austen by inspiring and encouraging new writers . . .

Our intention is to publish the very best short fiction. The Chair of judges is Michèle Roberts, award-winning author and Emeritus Professor of Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia.

We are looking for short stories of 2,000-2,500 words in length. This year the theme is ‘the heroes and villains in Jane Austen’s novels’. You can draw inspiration from any character or characters, male or female, whom you perceive to be heroic or villainous. Stories can have a historical or a contemporary setting – anything goes as long as it is well written and you state on the entry form how your idea originated.

PRIZE
  1. First prize : £1,000.
  2. Two runners up : £200 each.
  3. All three finalists will also win a week’s writers’ retreat at Chawton House.
  4. Seventeen other shortlisted authors will receive £40 plus publication in the winners’ anthology (the collection of last year’s winners, Dancing with Mr Darcy, has been sold in bookshops across the UK and has recently been published in the USA by Harper Collins).

Entrants can be based anywhere in the world- stories must be submitted in English.

The closing date is the 31st March 2011.

Juried Children’s Art Contest (Deadline March 2011)

The Garden City Historical Society announces its sixth annual Juried Children’s Art Contest, “A Tribute to St. Paul’s.” During the past five art contests, St. Paul’s School has regularly been a subject of the children’s entries. After having given the building a closer examination in preparation for creating their artworks, the children often expressed their concern over its future. It was only fitting that this year the Society honors and highlights the impact that this architectural and historic treasure has on our children.

The Historical Society invites students in grades kindergarten through 12 who reside in Garden City to participate. All submissions must illustrate an aspect of St. Paul’s School. Drawings must be created in pencil, color pencil, or pen and ink, and artwork must not exceed 18 by 24 inches, including matting. For high school students only (grades 9-12), we will again have a photography/computer graphics category. The deadline for all submissions is Friday, March 18, 2011.

The contest has four categories: K-1, Grades 2 through 5, Middle School, and High School. Photography/computer graphics will be a separate category for high school students only. The contest will be judged by local residents with art backgrounds. Awards will be presented to First Place, Second Place and Honorable Mention winners in each category.

The 2011 Children’s Art Contest will be partially underwritten by The Donnelly Group (a Ferrucci Partnership, 730 Franklin Avenue), Ryan Patrick Donnelly, President and Managing Partner. Ryan, who began his real estate career in 2005, was named Highest Ranking Realtor in America Under 30 and Top Residential Realtor by Long Island Business News in 2009. In 2010, he was named Top Young Realtor on Long Island and Highest Ranking Realtor Garden City. That year’s record breaking sales served as the catalyst for The Donnelly Group to go beyond the traditional real estate company style into new territory as a luxury boutique real estate firm with a focus on online and virtual property marketing. At The Donnelly Group, buyers from around the world can access homes through the company’s strategic website marketing and social media campaigns. Ryan is President of the Long Island Board of Realtors, Central Nassau Chapter.

The Historical Society will host a reception for the winning artists and their families on Sunday, April 3, at The Garden City Historical Society Museum, 109 Eleventh Street. Awards will be presented at that time. The exhibit, which includes all entries, will be open to the public at the Museum on April 3 and April 9-10, from 1 to 3 p.m. On Saturday afternoon, visitors are encouraged to stop in and browse the Society’s consignment shop, the A.T. Stewart Exchange, on the Museum’s Lower Level.

For further information, student permission forms, or to arrange for submission of artwork, please contact Mary Jane Caldwell, Education Committee chairperson, at 516-248-5917.
