CWJ Short Fiction Contest (Deadline April 2011)

HONOURABLE MENTIONS Receive Publication in Choice Works and the revived CWJ
  • Entries must be original, unpublished stories, any genre, maximum length 2,500 words (accurate word count please *NEW longer length*). Entrants must be Canadian citizens, or landed immigrants.
  • Manuscripts should be typed, double-spaced, and prepared in standard form except that no identification of the author is to appear on the manuscript itself.
  • Name, address and a short biography (200 words) of the author are to be submitted on a separate sheet to accompany the entry.
  • Manuscripts will NOT be returned, they are destroyed at the end of the competition in our fireplace. Send #10 (business size) S.A.S.E. for contest results only. If no SASE is included, we assume that you will keep an eye on the website for contest results.

Entries received too late for one deadline will be held over for the next deadline date. If you include an email address, an email confirmation that your entry has been received will be sent. A self-addressed stamped postcard would also be another way for you receive confirmation that the entry was received.

Winners to be announced and prize winning stories are published in the Canadian Writer's Journal. Entry gives permission to include all the contest winners in Choice Works which is published and available separately. Winners receive a complimentary copy.

ENTRY FEE : $5.00 for each story. (HST is included) Any number of stories may be entered as long as the entry fee is included for all of them. Only one cheque or money order is necessary for multiple entries (as long as the total matches the entry fees for the number of entries. [Starting in 2012, the entry fee will be $10, which will also include the 13% HST]

Entries must be postmarked by April 30th

No extensions. Entries received after the deadline for one contest will be held over to the next deadline date unless you give us different instructions.

11th annual BCIC-New Ventures Competition New Prizes for Agritech and Social Ventures (Deadline April 2011)

It’s that time of year again! The BCIC-New Ventures Competition: 2011 is now open for applications until April 18 at midnight.

The competition dates and seminar schedule have been officially set and now it’s up to you to invest $200 in your technology business idea and learn how to develop it into a profitable company.

As one of North America’s largest technology business idea competitions, we attract applicants from a wide range of industries including cleantech, media, Internet, information technology and life sciences.

BCIC and the New Ventures BC Society invite BC entrepreneurs to submit your ideas to the 11th annual BCIC-New Ventures Competition offering the chance to win a share of the more than $360,000 in prizes.

Added to the mix of prizes to be won this year are the $15,000 Vancity Social Venture Prize and two prizes for Agricultural technologies, valued at $30,000 and $20,000.

The competition is open to any BC person, resident or business with a technology-focused idea that has not yet secured significant financing from external investors (i.e. investors other than friends, family and company founders).

WHAT IS IT ?

A four-round technology business competition for early-stage BC entrepreneurs with an agricultural technology-focused idea. It features two business-education seminars focused on the commercialization and launch of agritech (with access to eight more general sessions) networking, mentoring and the chance to compete for $50,000 in specific prizes for agricultural businesses.

Round 1 : The Idea
Participants register in the competition and describe their idea. Registration Deadline is April 18, 2011.

Round 2 : Feasibility Test
Participants submit a five-page response to specific questions about their business idea. Judges will choose the 10 best ideas to advance to Round 3.

Round 3 : Condensed Venture Plan
Participants are paired with a mentor who helps them expand their idea into a condensed business plan—an eight-page response to specific questions. Five competitors will advance to Round 4.

Round 4 : Finale
Five finalists will make oral presentations to the jury on Sept 7, 2011. Judges will then select winners for the $30,000 First and $20,000 Second place Agritech Innovation Prizes.

Short Story Contest The Malahat Review's - Far Horizons Award for Short Fiction (Deadline May 2011)

The Malahat Review, Canada’s premier literary magazine, invites emerging short-story writers from Canada and abroad to enter the Far Horizons Award for Short Fiction.

Eligible authors have yet to publish their stories in book form. One prize of $1,000 (CAD) is awarded. Authors contributing to The Malahat Review have won or been nominated for National Magazine Awards for Fiction, the Pushcart Prize, and the Journey Prize.

Deadline
The deadline for the 2011 Far Horizons short fiction contest is May 1, 2011 (postmark date).

Guidelines
  1. Eligible writers have yet to publish their short fiction in book form and may submit one short story per entry.
  2. The story must not exceed 3,500 words. Please double space your work.
  3. Entrants receive a one-year subscription to The Malahat Review for themselves or a friend.
  4. Short stories previously published or accepted for publication elsewhere are not eligible.
  5. Entrants’ anonymity is preserved throughout the judging. Contact information (including an email address) should not appear on the submission, but along with the title on an enclosed separate page.
  6. No submissions will be accepted by email.
  7. The winner and finalists will be notified via email.
  8. Entrants will not be notified about the judges’ decisions even if an SASE is enclosed for this purpose.
  9. The winner and finalists will be announced on the Malahat web site, with the publication of the winning entry in The Malahat Review’s Fall 2011 issue, and in Malahat lite, the magazine’s e-newsletter, in July 2011.
  10. No entries will be returned, even if accompanied by an SASE.

Entry fee required :
  1. $25 CAD for Canadian entries;
  2. $30 US for American entries;
  3. $35 US for entries from Mexico and outside North America.

Essay Contest Victoria College - How has Victoria College changed your life? (Deadline March 2011)

Enter essay contest, $1,000 prize

How do I enter the "What's Your Story?" essay contest? How much could I win?

Victoria College is currently accepting essay applications for the annual "What's Your Story?" scholarship contest. Eligible VC students have the opportunity to win a $1,000 scholarship funded by the Victoria College Foundation. Essays should be submitted by the March 31 deadline along with an application. Scholarship winners will be notified by April 20, and awards will be presented during a special donor appreciation breakfast.

The best way to enter the contest is to visit the VC homepage, and scroll to the bottom where you'll find a link with access to an application.

Eligible VC students are currently enrolled, have at least a 2.0 grade point average and have completed at least six hours toward an associate degree or certificate. Applicants should also be planning to enroll in the fall 2011 semester.

Your essay and application should highlight your own experiences at VC and use specific examples in developing a thoughtful and genuine response to the question "How has Victoria College changed your life?"

Entries will be judged based on form and content and how well the essay captures the essence of the question posed. Judging will be conducted by a committee of two VC faculty members, two VC staff members and two Victoria community members. The committee will select the best essays and award the winners a $1,000 scholarship to be used for tuition and other expenses in the following semester.

Novel Competition - Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards (Deadline Aprill 2011)

The Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature (Palanca Awards), the Philippines’ most prestigious and longest-running literary contest is now accepting entries. The deadline for submission is midnight, 30 April, 2011.

This year the Palanca Awards is accepting entries for the Novel category. The Novel category is open every three years, in both English and Filipino divisions.

The following are the regular categories : English Division – Short Story, Short Story for Children, Essay, Poetry, Poetry for Children, One-act Play, and Full-length Play; Filipino Division – Maikling Kuwento, Maikling Kuwentong Pambata, Sanaysay, Tula, Tulang Pambata, Dulang May Isang Yugto, Dulang Ganap ang Haba, and Dulang Pampelikula; Regional Languages Division – Short Story-Cebuano, Short Story-Hiligaynon and Short Story-Iluko. Each contestant may submit only one entry per category.

To encourage young people to hone their literary skills, the Palanca Awards also welcomes essays under the Kabataan Division – its special division for writers aged below 18 years old. This year’s Kabataan Essay theme for the English category is “What is the most valuable lesson I learned from the Internet?” and “Ano ang pinakamahalagang aral ang aking natutunan mula sa Internet?” for the Filipino category.

The literary contest is open to all Filipino (or former Filipino) citizens, except current officers and employees of its organizing body, the Carlos Palanca Foundation, Inc. Contest rules and official entry forms are available at Palanca Awards’ official website, www.palancaawards.com.ph.

WWF International Smart Gear Design Competition (Deadline August 2011)

World Wildlife Fund (WWF) announced the launch of the 2011 International Smart Gear Competition today, to find innovative ways to reduce the amount of fisheries bycatch. Open to anyone from fisherman, backyard inventors and students, the competition will be open from March 1 to August 31, 2011.

“WWF’s goal with the Smart Gear competition is to inspire innovative ideas for environmentally-friendly fishing gear,” stated WWF VP of Fisheries Bill Fox. “In addition to fishermen losing millions of dollars each year due to bycatch, many other species, sometimes endangered marine life are unintentionally and needlessly killed by antiquated fishing gear, and it is jeopardizing their survival.

This competition identifies real-world fishing solutions that allow fishermen to fish smarter while helping to maintain ocean health.”

The 2011 International Smart Gear Competition is offering a grand prize of $30,000 and two $10,000 runner-up prizes. Additionally, in partnership with the International Seafood Sustainability Foundation, the competition is offering a $7,500 special tuna prize that will be awarded to the idea that will reduce the amount of bycatch found in tuna fisheries. Tuna sustainability is the top WWF global fisheries conservation priority.

APME Journalism Excellence Awards (Deadline May 2011)

The 2011 APME Journalism Excellence Awards honor superior journalism and innovation among newspapers and online news sites across the United States and Canada. The awards seek to promote excellence by recognizing work that is well written and incisively reported and that effectively challenges the status quo.

Categories include :
  1. Fifth Annual Innovator of the Year Award. The winner will be awarded $ 2,000.
  2. Second Annual Gannett Foundation Award for Innovation in Watchdog Journalism. The winner in each of two circulation categories will be awarded $ 2,500.

Student Ethics Scholarship Award – $2,500 Award (Deadline June 24, 2011)

Connecticut Better Business Bureau is now accepting entries for the 2011 CT BBB Student Ethics Scholarship Award. The annual competition is based on written essays that illustrate understanding and practice of high ethics, integrity and academic excellence.

Connecticut BBB President, Paulette Scarpetti, says the Student Ethics Scholarship Award identifies secondary school students who not only possess exemplary moral ethics, but also understand how ethical standards come into play in the marketplace.

“The pillars of leadership and community involvement also play an important role in the competition and marketplace. These form a foundation upon which successful and trustworthy business practices are built.”

The winner will receive $2,500 to help pay for school-related expenses such as tuition, books, room and board. Applicants must be secondary students currently in their junior year, and planning to attend an accredited college or university in the United States.

The winning essay will be selected by a panel of independent judges and the award presented at the Connecticut Better Business Bureau Annual Meeting and Awards Banquet this fall.

The Morris L. Cohen Student Essay Competition (Deadline April 2011)

The Legal History and Rare Books Section (LH&RB) of the American Association of Law Libraries, in cooperation with Gale Cengage Learning, announces the second annual Morris L. Cohen Student Essay Competition. The competition is named in honor of Morris L. Cohen, Professor Emeritus of Law at Yale Law School. Professor Cohen’s scholarly work is in the fields of legal research, rare books, and historical bibliography. The purpose of the competition is to encourage scholarship in the areas of legal history, rare law books, and legal archives, and to acquaint students with the American Association of Law Libraries (AALL) and law librarianship.

Students currently enrolled in accredited graduate programs in library science, law, history, or related fields are eligible to enter the competition. Both full- and part-time students are eligible. Membership in AALL is not required.

Essays may be on any topic related to legal history, rare law books, or legal archives.

Here are the details :

Round 1 : Ideation

To start, just come up with an idea of how you could use Hoover's business information to solve a problem within the following three categories :

* Most Innovative Use of Hoover's API
* Mobile Solutions
* Social Media Integration

Your idea should clearly state :

* the target user
* the problem
* the solution
* anything else you think is important

Make sure to use visual aids - such as mockups.

Submit your idea by either creating a short video (no more than 4 minutes) or a document (PDF, .doc, .ppt). Three ideas, one per category, will be awarded $2,000 American Express gift cards, and seven additional finalists will be selected from this round. These lucky ten will be invited to the next round - implementation.

Round 2 : Implementation

Now we want to see the top 10 ideas come to life. These finalists will be given an API key to create their prototype and take it as far as they can.

Our judges will review your brainchild and evaluate it on :

* Code Completeness
* Code Quality
* User Interface Quality
* User Experience / Usability
* Innovation
* Likelihood of Adoption

The prototype ranking the best on most, if not all, of these criteria will be selected as the winner. The grand champion will receive a $10,000 American Express gift card.

  1. Your name
  2. Your city and state
  3. The number of kids you have and their ages
  4. Your great idea and its status: Is it a product in development or already for sale?
  5. Your plans are for the prize: We won’t hold you to this, of course, but we think that our readers will find this crucial when voting for our winner.
  6. To select our finalists, we might request that you send us a product sample to review. After we review the products, we will donate them to local women’s and children’s centers.

The Mother of All Ideas Contest Rules
The Mother of All Ideas Contest is open to United States residents, over the age of majority. The odds of winning will depend on number of eligible entries. Limit one vote per nominee per email address. There is one prize available to be won of $2,500. No purchase necessary.

By the submission of the entry email and product samples, Entrant agrees to the following :
  1. Entrant company, or its duly authorized representative, certifies that all information submitted in the Entry Form is true.
  2. Entrant understands and agrees that the Mommy MD Guides have the right to grant or not grant awards in its sole and absolute discretion, which Entrant agrees not to challenge in any forum or setting, whether public or private.
  3. Entrant certifies that each product that it submits to the Mother of All Ideas Contest complies with all mandatory and voluntary safety standards.
  4. Entrant understands and agrees that : (a) any review that the Mommy MD Guides conduct will be limited solely to the guidelines and general criteria outlined herein for the sole benefit of the Mother of All Ideas Contest; and (b) the Mommy MD Guides’ review, analysis, commentary, and/or the grant of an award shall under no circumstances be deemed to constitute any opinion, representation, or warranty as to the safety of the products by any at the Mommy MD Guides, its officers, trustees, directors, agents, and employees.
  5. Entrant agrees to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless the Mommy MD Guides as well as all of its officers, trustees, directors, agents, employees, successors and assigns, from and against any and all Damages and Claims. “Damages and Claims” are understood and agreed to mean: (a) damages caused by products submitted to the Mother of All Ideas Contest; and (b) claims, demands, causes of action, debts, liabilities, losses or costs (including but not limited to lawyers’ fees and costs), however designated, that relate to the products Entrant has submitted to the Mother of All Ideas Contest and/or any awards granted by the Mommy MD Guides to the Entrant.
  6. Under no circumstances shall the Mommy MD Guides be liable to any party on account of use of the products submitted. Such limitation of liability shall apply to prevent recovery of direct, indirect, incidental, consequential, special and exemplary damages, arising from any of use of the products submitted.
  7. Entrant certifies to the Mommy MD Guides that its submission does not infringe upon any other party’s intellectual property rights.

Centennial Edition of The Amelia Lapeña Bonifacio Literary Contest (Deadline April 2011)

The UP Diliman Department of English and Comparative Literature (DECL) announces that the Centennial edition of the Amelia Lapeña Bonifacio Literary Contest is now accepting entries in four categories. They are short story, poetry, creative nonfiction, and literature for children.

Guidelines :
  1. The contest is open to bona‐fide undergraduate and graduate students of the University of the Philippines enrolled in the 2nd semester of AY 2010‐2011. (The contest is not open to faculty members of the English Department.)
  2. Authors may submit not more than 2 entries in each category.
  3. The author should not put his real name or any other identification on any copy of his entry. He should sign each entry with a pen name and submit the same with a sealed envelope on the outside of which should be written the category, title of entry and pen name. Inside the envelope should also be a slip of paper containing the title of the entry, the real name of the author, the author’s address and telephone no., the author’s college, and a photocopy of the Form 5 for the 2nd semester AY 2010‐2011.
  4. Only unpublished works may be entered.
  5. Only works which have not won a prize in another contest may be entered.
  6. In the short story and creative nonfiction categories, an entry must not be longer than 20 pages.
  7. In the poetry category, an entry must consist of at least 5 poems.
  8. In the story for children category, an entry must not be longer than 10 pages.
  9. All entries must be written in English and must show a certain degree of mastery of the English language.
  10. Entries may be on any subject or theme.
  11. The author shall retain ownership of the copyright to his award‐winning work. However, the sponsor shall have the right to the first publication of the work. Editors designated by the sponsor may edit portions of the work to suit demands of publication.
  12. The prize will be withdrawn from any author found to have plagiarized his winning entry entirely or in part.
  13. Entries must be addressed to Dr. Isabelita Reyes, DECL, Faculty Center, UP Diliman, and submitted not later than April 28, 2011.
  14. All entries should be submitted in four (4) copies including the original. They should be typewritten or computer‐typed, double‐spaced, on regular sized (8½ x 11 inches) bond paper, with one‐inch margins on all sides.
  15. The Board of Judges shall have the discretion not to award any prize if in its judgment no meritorious entry has been submitted.
  16. The sponsor has the sole right to designate the persons who shall constitute the Board of Judges in each of the categories.
  17. The names of the winners and the names of the Board of Judges shall be announced on May 21, 2011. Awarding will be on May 28, 2011.
  18. All parties submitting entries are deemed to have accepted the rules of the contest, and agree to abide thereby.

The African American Studies Program Essay Competition (Deadline April 2011)

The African American Studies Program announces an Essay Competition for student essays on any subject related to African American Studies.

$150 award for best undergraduate essay.
$250 award for best graduate essay.

The competition is open to all current Boston University students in any school or department. Undergraduate essays should be 10 to 12 pages in length. Graduate essays should be 18 to 20 pages in length. Essays should be submitted to the Essay Committee at the African American Studies Program, 138 Mountfort Street, Brookline, MA 02446 or by email to : afam@bu.edu.

Submissions are due no later than 5pm on Friday, April 15, 2011.
